Fun facts about the game of pool:

• Billiards was the first game to have a world championship (1873).
• The term scratch, referring to pocketing the cue ball, was originated from the penalty assessed for such a foul. In the early days of playing pool, the score was often kept on a chalkboard. When a player pocketed the cue ball, his opponent scratched a point off the shooter's score.
• Research conducted a few years back concluded that billiard champions have the highest average age of any sport, 35.6 years. So you still have a shot at the pros.
• Pool is one of the safest sports in the world.
• Earlier pool tables featured level vertical walls for rails that were called "banks", from their resemblance to riverbeds. Their task was to stop the pool balls from falling off the table, however, pool experts soon discovered that their pool balls could bounce off the table rails, so they started to knowingly aim for them. Hence, the "bank shot" was born.
• In 1903, the first coin-operated pool table was produced; the cost per game was one penny.
