Larry Bird and Earvin Magic Johnson was the NBAs most valued rivalry that rejuvenated the sport in the 1980s. The competition began in college when Johnson and the Michigan State Spartans defeated Bird and the Indiana State Sycamores to win the 1979 NCAA title. When both players joined the NBA in 1980, this time it was Bird who beat Johnson for Rookie of the Year. The Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers met three times in the NBA Finals with the Lakers taking two of them. Although both were three-time league MVPs, 12-time All-Stars, and nine-time all NBA first team players, it was the rivalry that defined each player and ultimately the game.
